Outreach Programs

The 2016 summer festival ended on July 29th.  Please check back in early June of 2017 for next summer’s outreach schedule.  In the meantime, come to one of our many special events, held throughout the year – check out the NRO calendar of events.

About Outreach Programs:
For symphony orchestras to survive and thrive, musicians need to be advocates for classical music in all aspects of life, especially by being active and present in their communities. During their summer fellowship, National Repertory Orchestra musicians take part in the NRO’s Education and Community Engagement Program, which prepares the musicians for an active role in the communities they will be serving, and, more importantly, provides free musical events for youth, the general community, and those who are underserved in Summit County.

YOUTH AND EDUCATION
Robert Franz, NRO conducting alumnus and Musician as Teacher clinician, instructs NRO musicians in the methodology used to connect with children. NRO musicians introduce children ages 5-12 to orchestral music through a variety of age-appropriate activities. Activities include movement to music, sound-scapes, rhythmic recognition, composition and “petting zoos” – a popular, hands-on format that allows children to hold and play real musical instruments. Venues for these activities have included: the Breckenridge Riverwalk Center’s Imagination Express, Mountain Top Children’s Museum, Red Tail Ranch, Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, Mountain Arts Festival, Summit County Day Camps, and Summit County Libraries.

Early exposure to classical music engages children’s emotional, mental, and cognitive development. Thus, these events will improve the quality of life for Summit County children and their parents. Maestro Franz works with NRO musicians to help them develop an appropriate teaching method that corresponds to actual curricula and enhances their musical education experiences. Each of these experiences serves to introduce and/or reinforce children’s interest in music, strengthening participation in school music programs across the county. The NRO is a firm believer that music is for everyone and takes great pride in its ability to provide the community with free musical events.
